Last month, a study was published in the journalBehavioural Processes, which detailed that domestic cats have 276 different facial expressions that they can — and do — channel. All of the felines studied were male and female adult domestic shorthairs that had each been neutered or spayed, the study said. Cat.Getty After 194 minutes of video footage was captured, which included 186 cat interactions, the authors compared the expressions with the Facial Action Coding System, which is designed specifically for cats, the study said....

The team of researchers examined the traits of 70 kitten and 38 cat subjects, and looked at how they behaved both with and without their human caregivers. The experiment, called an attachment test, placed the felines in a room with their owners for two minutes, before being separated for another two minutes....

The scientists showed pet cats living in homes and felines living in “cat cafés” photos of cats they resided with to determine their reactions. The cats were then played an audio recording of their owners, or a researcher, calling out a name — either the name of the familiar cat in the photo or a fake name....
