“Tonight’s plans involve champagne and @cobrakaiseries!” she captioned the post. “I’m pretty sure @william_zabka stole this from wardrobe to give to me, but it’s being put to good use! 🐍 🐍🐍 🦅 🦅🦅 🥋 🥋🥋🥂🥂 🥂 Cheers, everyone!”
After Underwood tweeted in 2020 abouthow “awesome"Cobra Kaiis, Hurwitz says he and fellow creators, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg, didn’t hesitate to reach out to her about making a cameo.
“In the world ofThe Karate Kid, the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament is basically the Super Bowl — only it takes place in a gymnasium and the sponsors are local car dealers and sandwich shops,” Hurwitz explains to PEOPLE. “We thought it would be funny if one of the characters who helps put on the event each year constantly talks about having a celebrity guest in attendance but never comes through, only to pull it off unexpectedly in a spectacular way this year.”
“Who better thanCarrie Underwood!?” he adds. “When her team responded with a ‘she’d love to!’ we were blown away and quickly off to the races.”
On the day Underwood filmed her scene, Hurwitz says the entire cast and crew were beyond excited.
“We’ll never forget how nervous we were going over to the tour bus to meet her for the first time, only to find out that she had just as many butterflies as we did,” he says. “She was so excited to share the screen with all of her favorite characters from the show.”
“The funny thing is that we never actually told the 300 extras on set that day that she was about to appear so the excitement you’re watching is authentic,” he notes. “Carrie could not have been more friendly and gracious to every member of the cast and crew. She hung around for hours after shooting, taking photos and chatting with everyone.”
In an interview withEntertainment Weekly, fellow creator Hayden Schlossberg also explained why Underwood didn’t perform Joe Esposito’s “You’re the Best,” which previously played during the originalKarate Kidfilm’s tournament scene.
“We felt that if we just did that song, it would just be a copycat of what the movie was,” he explained. “We love this song, ‘The Moment of Truth.’ It’s a little bit less known, and yet it still has that same 1980s sports-rock anthem vibe. So to have her sing that, it gave that same vibe to the tournament without doing the exact same thing.”
