Every parent both eagerly anticipates and dreads the transition that accompanies their kids growing up into young adults. And celebrities are no different – as these celebrities candidly shared with People, describing the perks and pitfalls of parenting grown kids.

When country singerTrisha YearwoodmarriedGarth Brooksin 2005, she became a step-mom, or “bonus mom,” as she calls it, to his three daughters from a previous marriage (Taylor, now 26, August, now 24, and Allie, now 22, with ex Sandy Mahl). And to help her navigate that new role, she recalls, Brooks gave her some good advice.

“They have a mom, so don’t try to be their mom or their best friend,” Yearwood said her husband told her at the time. And these days? “They are lovely young women, and now we are all friends.”

In the case of actressJada Pinkett Smith, her relationship with her daughterWillow, 18, now includes many adult conversations, including one that stands out in particular.

“Probably the most [memorable] is when she said she walked in on Will and I [having sex],” Pinkett Smith, 47, toldPEOPLE Now.

The star is referring to an episode of her Facebook Watch seriessRed Table Talk, during which the 18-year-old confessed to her mother that her “first introduction to sex was walking in on you and daddy.”
