Chelsea Handlerdoesn’t think comedians should be held accountable for their past material — includingKevin Hart.

Months after Hart, 39,stepped downfrom hostingthe Oscarsfollowing an intense backlash over his past homophobic tweets and standup jokes, Handler came to her fellow comedian’s defense.

“I don’t think so,” she replied. “I mean, I honestly respect what Kevin Hart did. I love Kevin, I know him personally, and I think he’s a great guy. And I honestly think we’ve all made mistakes.”

Acknowledging her own past material, Handler admitted that she had “said things that are deplorablethat I would never say again.”

“You can’t just hold people to the fire for things that went on — we all evolve, we all grow up, we get it now, we understand, this isn’t allowed,” she added.

Agreeing, Cohen added, “the culture has changed.”

“Interesting,” Cannon, 38,tweetedat the time, alongside an old tweet of Handler’s from 2010. “I wonder if there was any backlash here…”

In the message, she wrote, “This is what a f— bird looks like when he flexes,” including a photo that is no longer available.

Speaking with PEOPLE in Atlanta ahead of the Super Bowl, however, Hart said he’s focused on positivity.

“Negativity only wins if you allow it to get to you, so positivity forever will win,” he shared.
